Creating a Myth

So far, creating the myth has been the most enjoyable part of this class! I truly allowed myself to get creative and have fun with it, which I think is what benefited the overall experience. Having the artistic freedom to make up a myth about whatever I wanted felt intimidating at first, because it had been a while since I had done any type of creative writing and I was worried that I would be hit by writer's block. I originally began with a story on why we rewatch TV shows, and it slowly fizzled into why people have a sweet tooth!? Creating a myth differs from studying a myth, due to the unique element of tapping into your ability to be inspired and original, but I think the two go hand in hand. One has to have the knowledge and comprehension of myths, even if it is only conceptual in order to effectively create their own myths. I think that taking the time to study the fundamental concept of myths will aid people in developing their own myths. Overall, I think that this was a super fun and light assignment, even developing the website was fun, but it was time consuming. I think that this assignment “feeds 2 birds with 1 scone” sort to speak because it helps students develop their own writing and critical thinking skills, while also developing and strengthening their technical skills by making their own website. In an increasingly tech dependent world, students need to be able to have the resources and capabilities to work with mediums outside of pen and paper.

  1. Adela! That's funny how you went from rewatching TV shows to sweet tooth. I like that you had fun with the project. I think that's one of the great things about using this assignment in our own classrooms — it's allowing the students to exercise their writing chops without really knowing it, kind of like going to Disneyland for fun and not realizing you're getting 20,000 steps in. (I never heard "feeding two birds with one scone" — animal lover, eh? Ha!) But yeah, exactly. But I agree about using tech, something I think more and more students are becoming interested in, but also something they might be really anxious to do and excited to do. But it's also something that they may have to know how to do in the workplace. Really, tech is going to be everywhere by the time they're out there looking for work.

  2. Hey Adela! I love that this has been your favorite part of class so far, it was pretty fun being creative and thinking of all the aspects of a myth. I love your perspective on what this assignment does for students. It really does give a double perspective in the sense that you are learning how to think critically and relaying it into words. That is always the goal as teachers, to find lessons that can help students develop more than one skill. Especially with complex ideas like myths where there is so much room for imagination. I thought it was really cool how you went from one topic to another and as cool as the sweet tooth theory is, as an avid re-watcher I am wanting to know more. This is the fun of it all really getting to try out ideas. When you think about it we have endless things in life that could use a good myth to back them up.

  3. Hey Adela!

I agree, writing this myth was definitely an enjoyable part of this class! I also felt intimidated by the assignment at first then ended up really enjoying it. I feel like its been so long since we've had the opportunity to write creatively with the workload we've been facing this semester. It feels like a breath of fresh air to have a creative outlet! I could definitely see creating a similar assignment like this with students. I like how it gives us the opportunity to be creative and also practice the technical skill of creating a website. I could see using this assignment as a form of a literature circle or other literary analysis assignment. Maybe instead of presenting slides to the class, students could present their websites instead. I think by giving students a technology driven assignment like this we could also monitor their learning and check for understanding along the way. I also like the subject of your myth given the fact that I too have a huge sweet tooth!
